Moving off oil or LPG? What South West homes need to know about switching to a heat pump
Across the South West, plenty of homes aren’t on mains gas. If yours is one of them, you’ll know the routine: keeping an eye on the tank, ordering deliveries, and hoping prices behave over winter.
If you’ve been wondering whether a heat pump could replace your oil or LPG boiler, now is a good time to look into it. Homes like yours currently qualify for the biggest heat pump grant available, but part of it has an end date.
Here’s what you need to know.
Up to £9,000 off, but not for long
The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump for eligible homes in England and Wales.
If your home is heated by oil or LPG and isn’t connected to mains gas, you can get an extra £1,500 on top, taking the grant to £9,000. That extra £1,500 is only available until March 2027.
A few things worth knowing:
- You don’t apply yourself. As an MCS-certified installer, we apply for the grant on your behalf and it comes straight off your quote.
- It’s one grant per property, so it’s worth getting it right the first time with a properly designed system.
- There’s a survey and paperwork to do first, so the sooner you book, the more comfortably you’ll be within the deadline.
If the grant doesn’t cover the full cost, the new government-backed Warm Homes Loan can help spread the rest through participating lenders. We’re happy to talk you through your options.
What changes when you move off oil or LPG
No more deliveries. A heat pump runs on electricity, so there’s no tank to monitor, no fuel to order and no worrying about running low in a cold snap.
Your old tank. Once your heat pump is up and running, your oil or LPG tank is no longer needed. We’ll talk you through the options for it as part of your quote.
Hot water from a cylinder. Heat pumps heat your water through a hot water cylinder. If you already have one, it may need upgrading to one designed for a heat pump. We’ll check this during your survey.
Warm, steady heat. Heat pumps work best running gently for longer, rather than in short bursts like an oil boiler. Radiators feel warm rather than hot, but your rooms still reach a comfortable temperature.
Some radiators may change. Because heat pumps run at lower temperatures, a few rooms may need a larger radiator. Most homes need some upgraded rather than all of them.

Is a heat pump right for my home?
Heat pumps suit a lot of South West homes, from village cottages to newer builds, but every property is different. That’s why we always start with a proper home survey and heat loss calculation, so your system is sized for your home and the way you live.
If a heat pump isn’t the right fit, we’ll tell you honestly. We install and service oil boilers too, so we’ll always recommend what’s best for you.
