How to get £7.5k towards upgrading your boiler
We have exciting news.
We will now be able to offer our customers up to £7,500 towards upgrading their heating systems, as part of the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) was introduced by the government as a means to encourage people in the UK to install low carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers.
More and more UK households are opting to install heat pumps thanks to the range of benefits they offer, such as cleaner energy, less maintenance and lower running costs, as well as being a safer alternative to gas boilers.
What exactly is a heat pump?
In the simplest terms, a heat pump is a device which transfers heat from one place to another. When it comes to heating (or cooling) people’s homes, the most common type of heat pump is the air-source heat pump; which sits in a small unit outside and extracts heat from the air before pumping it inside. Heat pumps are said to use minimal electricity and reduce carbon emissions by over 40%, with an average lifespan of 15 years.
As a heat pump captures thermal energy which is already present in the environment, the system itself doesn’t burn any fuel, and therefore doesn’t emit any carbon dioxide.
Heat pumps are also more efficient than any other heating system; as the amount of heat they produce is far greater than the quantity of electricity used to power the system.
While an air source heat pump is considered one of the most popular ‘green’ heating systems, the BUS also covers ground source heat pumps, as well as biomass boilers in rural locations (such as in properties which aren’t connected to the gas grid).
How can I take advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The BUS runs until 2028, and is open to all homeowners, as well as owners of small business properties, in England and Wales.
After you’ve checked that your property is eligible, you can reach out to an installer, such as Custom Heat, to kick-start the process.
Since the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led, your installer will apply for the grant on your behalf, and then subtract it from the cost of the installation. Your chosen installer will work with you to make sure you qualify for the grant before proceeding with the installation or providing a final quote. You’ll need to confirm that the installer is acting on your behalf when Ofgem contacts you, and after that, you’re good to go!
